The issue of unresponsive prospects plagues even the most experienced sales professionals.

In this blog, we’ll break down proven strategies shared by sales experts Meridith Elliott Powell and Mark Hunter on how to engage silent prospects, evaluate their worth, and stay top-of-mind—without sounding desperate.

Is the Prospect Even Worth Your Time?

Before you dive headfirst into chasing down someone who hasn’t replied, ask yourself: Is this prospect actually worth it?

Meridith Elliott Powell suggests starting with research. If a lead has never responded in two years, and you can’t find meaningful data on them (revenue, urgency, etc.), it may be time to let them go.

“I just took them out [of my CRM]. I’m not sure it’s worth my time or energy.”

Mark Hunter agrees: having better leads is more important than having more leads. If you can’t verify a lead’s legitimacy online or through networking, it’s likely not a good lead.

Stop Casting a Wider Net—Narrow Your Focus

When responses dry up, many salespeople panic and broaden their outreach. That’s the wrong move.

Instead, double down on your Ideal Customer Profile (ICP). Stay focused. If a lead doesn’t check your ICP boxes, they’re probably not a fit, regardless of how many follow-ups you send.

Why Would They Respond? Create Urgency

One key question to ask before following up: Why would they respond to me right now?

Even people who like you won’t respond if your outreach doesn’t align with their current pain points.

“You have to create a sense of urgency… if Mark emailed me about a problem I am currently having, now, all of a sudden, that makes me want to respond.” – Meridith

Bring value that resonates with what matters most to them right now, not what you want to sell.

No Response ≠ No Interest

Silence doesn’t always mean disinterest. Prospects may be overwhelmed, distracted, or simply not ready. Stay top-of-mind without being annoying.

“I’ve had people reach out to me time after time… then I am ready to buy and I do reach out to them.” – Mark

Be patient. As Meridith shared, she had a prospect go cold for seven years, then suddenly reach out ready to buy. Timing is everything.

Stay Visible—Even If They Don’t Engage

Just because a prospect isn’t replying doesn’t mean they’re not paying attention. Your visibility—emails, newsletters, LinkedIn posts—matters.

“He’s seen my newsletter. He’s seen me on social. He was watching, even if he never responded.”

Keep your brand present in their world. When the time is right, they’ll remember you.

Be Authentic and Provide Value First

Want a response? Stop selling and start serving. Whether you’re asking for feedback or reaching out with insight, your intentions need to be genuine.

“Make sure your intentions are pure. People can sense when it’s just a bait and switch.”

Sales outreach that truly helps prospects solve problems—especially in chaotic times—gets noticed.

Why Are Prospects So Unresponsive Lately?

If your usual methods aren’t working, it’s not you—it’s the market. Economic uncertainty, shifting regulations, and global events are impacting buying behavior.

“They have way bigger problems than buying a product or service… Your prospects’ lives just went insane.”

Adjust your messaging to reflect what’s top-of-mind for them right now. Be relevant, not robotic.

Don’t Get Cute or Pushy with Follow-Ups

There’s nothing worse than a follow-up that sounds passive-aggressive.

“If I wanted that product and it was typically $500,000 and they were selling it to me for a penny, I would not buy it.”

Avoid “Did you get my last email?” messages. Instead, take the burden of follow-up off the customer. Make it easy and valuable for them to respond.

Understand Upstream and Downstream Pressures

Your prospects don’t live in a vacuum. Know what’s impacting them both upstream (supply chain, sourcing, regulations) and downstream (their customers).

“They’re only dealing with their number one or number two issue. That’s it.”

Position your product or service as a solution to one of those top two priorities.

Build Relationships Before Selling

Sometimes, prospects call just to ask for a price. If they’re unwilling to share information, they’re likely just price shopping—not looking for a relationship.

Instead, redirect the conversation:

“You don’t get a price from me until I understand your needs… I wouldn’t want to see you waste your money.”

Help them see you’re a consultant, not a commodity.

Final Thought: Earn the Right to Be Heard

Sales is about showing up consistently, authentically, and with purpose. If you can do that, even your “unresponsive” prospects will take notice.

As Mark Hunter said:

“You’re not a priority to your customer until you become a necessity.”

And that starts by being relevant, valuable, and visible—on their terms, not yours.
